Fado Em Mim

This is a follow-up to my Amália Rodrigues post and Wouter's Nynke Laverman post. Part three of Fado week here at Splendida.

Mariza is a young (32 year old) Fadista and follower of Amália Rodrigues. Her music honors the deep tradition of Fado Português while breathing new life into the art form and gently pushing it in new directions.

Born in Mozambique to a Portuguese father and a Mozambican mother, Mariza grew up in Lisbon's Mouraria quarter, where the family moved when she was three. Her parents owned a cafe where Mariza began singing Fado at age five.

  • Ó Gente Da Minha Terra -- Mariza: Fado em Mim
  • Que Deus Me Perdoe -- " . . . " (2001)

  • Transparente -- Mariza: Transparente (2005)

  • "Transparente" is a tribute to Mariza's African grandmother. Lift a glass of vino verde to your own grandmother.
